Carol Smith
Birdena Carol Ann Peacock Smith
Birdena Carol Ann Peacock Smith, always known as Carol, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 19, 2025, due to dementia. She was 88 years old. Carol was the eldest daughter born to Arthur Joseph Peacock and Birdena Valentine Lewan Peacock, May 26, 1936, in Van Nuys, CA. Carol had one sister, Melinda Suzanne Abramofsky (Linda). She had a happy childhood, growing up in North Hollywood. Carol met the love of her life, Robert Howard Smith (Bob), in 7th grade. They married at age 18 and have been married 70+ years. They have 4 children, Debi Reynolds (Randy), Linda Sward (George), Patti Hanks (Byron) and Russell Smith.
Carol was a loving wife, mother and homemaker who was a good cook and excellent seamstress, sewing the majority of the family’s clothes. She also enjoyed needlework and crocheting. She played piano and especially loved singing in high school productions, at weddings and in choirs. Her lovely solo, soprano voice was beautiful! In her mid-30’s, Carol went back to college, majoring in accounting at California State University Northridge. She excelled in school, graduated with honors and started her professional career. She passed the CPA exam and ultimately became a partner at Vance, Thrift and Biller, a CPA office in Ventura. She enjoyed her work, finding accounting to be both challenging and rewarding.
Upon retirement, Carol was a good sport to follow Bob’s love of sailing. They sailed to all the offshore islands and as far south as Catalina. They also crewed on a sailboat in Mexico. After a few hairy sea adventures, Bob and Carol decided to stay on land and traveled extensively with their RV for over 20 years. They covered most of the United States, Mexico and Canada. They saw beautiful places and made many good friends with their fellow travelers. Another favorite activity was lawn bowling. Carol and Bob were active members of the Oxnard Lawn Bowling Club for over 20 years, serving in many capacities. Carol was a good bowler, enjoying the exercise and camaraderie the game provided. They always said, “If everyone were lawn bowlers, all would be right with the world.”
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and sister. She is survived by her husband, 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Per Carol’s wishes, there will be no organized Celebration of Life. She hopes everyone who desires will celebrate her friendship in their own way. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Oxnard Lawn Bowling Club, 350 N. C Street, Oxnard, CA, 93030.
